Introduced in the late 1970s, the first Suzuki 4x4, the LJ series, carved out its own market niche as a compact and affordable workhorse. The LJ evolved into the highly successful SJ series and Samurai models, which became the first ‘lifestyle’ 4x4s on the market. When the Vitara appeared in 1989, it proved popular as an alternative to a ‘hot hatch’, and since then the Suzuki off-roader brand has gone from strength to strength.
The Suzuki GSX-R series is synonymous with performance and has become one of the most evocative marques in motorcycling. This book explores the original GSX-R750 concept, its competition successes, and how its eye-opening performance, light weight, and charismatic personality established the race-replica market segment that Suzuki continues to define. Each generation of the GSX-R family is explored through interviews with Suzuki engineers and designers. Readers will be taken inside the off-limits Ryuyo R & D center and test track, site of all the engineering and development of the GSX-R models, followed by a virtual factory tour showing a GSX-R being built.
Suzuki’s seminal GSX-R750 is an evergreen favourite with bikers across the world. When launched in 1985 it almost single-handedly kick-started the craze for race-replica machines, and since then the machine has been one of the leading benchmarks for performance and style, as well as character, in the sports bike class. The GSX-R has stayed in production in its many different forms for the past 15 years and has also had an enviable race record. Since the bike’s launch, more than 40,000 have been sold worldwide.
